LTS is seeking an experienced Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to support the program with the Department of Developmental Services in the state of California. This position will be in various STAR locations: Vacaville, CA; Springville, CA; Porterville, CA; Costa Mesa, CA.

The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will provide general behavioral training, psychiatric nursing care and on-site direct care to STAR residents. The LVN will have ongoing interaction with consumers with developmental disabilities and severe psychiatric and behavioral conditions at STAR residence and in community settings, such as consumer’s homes, hospital or psychiatric settings.

Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Provide direct care, support and training to STAR consumers:

    • Assists consumers in all activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, basic housekeeping, and dining. These duties include lifting, positioning and assisting in consumer mobility. Additional needs as identified by the Interdisciplinary Team.

    • Follows all individualized nursing and behavioral support plans.

    • Provide services which will assist each consumer in achieving maximum social, emotional, intellectual, developmental and cognitive growth.

    • Provides positive intervention and follows individualized activity schedules for all consumers, including escorts to community outings (e.g. dining out, shopping, school, family visits).

    • Assists consumers in training and encouraging independent life skills (e.g. cleaning room, budgeting, planning activities).

    • Accountable for the health, safety, and welfare of the consumers they are escorting.

    • Provides one-to-one supervision/direct observation of consumers on special precautions, such as elopement risks, suicide risks, serious medical condition and risk of serious self-injurious behavior to the consumers.

    • Responds to emergencies that involve the use of medical/behavioral intervention techniques.

  • Performs nursing procedures within the scope of the Licensed Vocational Nursing requirements to STAR residents.

    • May require specialized skills in ostomy care/feeding techniques/respiratory care and adaptive equipment use, and any other procedure authorized.

  • Participates as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team in all aspects of the development and implementation of the STAR resident’s Needs and Services Plan. Assists staff in occupational, recreational, vocational, and educational therapy programs for consumers.

  • Works at various sites as needed to meet staffing requirements. Works extended hours and/or varying shifts. Attends and participates in training as required.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid and current Licensed Vocational Nurse license issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician without restrictions. As a licensed professional, you are required to maintain a valid license, and comply with all professional conduct requirements within your licensure.

  • Must have at least six months’ prior experience providing direct care to individuals with developmental disabilities who have challenging behavior service needs.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be prepared and able to work with consumers with intellectual and developmental disabilities (e.g. autistic spectrum disorder) and severe behavioral (e.g. aggression, self-injurious behavior, property destruction, and elopement) and psychiatric conditions and symptoms (e.g. psychosis, mood disorders, PTSD, and suicidal ideation).

  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment which ensures respect, dignity and protects privacy, rights, confidentiality and physical/emotional well-being of all consumers.

  • Possession and maintenance of sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during emergency situations, or during physically, mentally or emotionally stressful situations encountered on the job without endangering his/her own health and well- being or that of fellow employees, individuals, or the public.

  • May involve heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling for up to 5 minutes and pushing, pulling, grabbing, carrying, twisting and reaching, at or above shoulder level. Most of the time will be sitting, standing, and/or walking, which may include irregular surfaces.

  • Must be able to lift 100 pounds with assistance and perform and be competent in self-defense and hands-on intervention training. Including; two person physical containment with resistive consumers up to 350 pounds for up to 10 minutes, safely contain one limb of a combative consumer up to 5 minutes, push/pull/lift up to 50 pounds (including laundry or medication carts), quickly respond to alarm within 200 feet (may occur several times daily), run 100 yards and assist consumers to a standing position (up to 350 pounds).

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment.

  • Must be able to complete all required training.

  • May require overnight stays and work extended hours and/or varying shifts.
