Position Purpose

The Gas Planning Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the long-range planning of MG&E’s natural gas distribution system. This role is designed for a student who is curious, motivated, and eager to learn how engineering, data, and real-world operations come together to keep a complex energy system running safely and reliably.

The intern will work alongside engineers on hydraulic modeling, data analysis, and system planning projects, while gaining exposure to utility operations, regulatory requirements, and cross-department coordination. This internship offers meaningful project work along with opportunities to build technical skills and professional confidence.

Core Responsibilities

The intern will contribute to planning work under the guidance of experienced engineers, including:

  • Assist with hydraulic modeling and system simulations using Synergi Gas software.
  • Support long-range system planning studies through data analysis and research.
  • Compile figures, tables, and draft technical content for reports and presentations.
  • Review engineering data, system records, and documentation for accuracy and quality.
  • Observe and support field activities related to data collection or system analysis when appropriate.
  • Participate in project meetings, technical discussions, and training sessions.
  • Present a summary of learning and project outcomes at the conclusion of the internship.

Skills

  • Comfortable working with computers and software tools (Microsoft Excel strongly preferred).
  • Interest in data analysis, engineering systems, or infrastructure planning.

  • Mechanical curiosity and a willingness to learn new tools and concepts.
  • Professional attitude and positive work ethic.
  • No prior gas utility experience required, just a willingness to learn and contribute.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Currently enrolled in an engineering, engineering technology or related technical program.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time (40 hours/week) during summer: mid-May through late August.
  • Hybrid work model with remote flexibility.
  • Additional part-time (15–20 hours/week) availability during fall and spring semesters based on business needs.

 

Pre-employment will require satisfactory completion of a background check and drug screen.
