Job Description:

The Preparator I provides technical support to the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) labs to ensure they function safely, efficiently, and that all specimens are prepared at the highest professional standards. This position is responsible for the proper stabilization, preparation, and housing of K/Pg vertebrate fossils collected from the Rocky Mountain West. She/he/they will provide scientific expertise in paleontology and geology to support DMNS efforts to deliver world-class research, curation, and outreach.

This position supervises DES volunteers and interns.

This is a 3 year term position that will end 3 years after start date.

 

Essential duties: 

  • Stabilizes, repairs, and rehouses vertebrate fossils for safe storage in the DES collections.
  • Practices and teaches professional preparation as directed by the lab staff in consultation with the DES curators.
  • Oversees the work of lab volunteers, provides additional trainings as required, and mentors/supervises volunteers, students, and interns.
  • Continually works to integrate the DES Labs with the Prehistoric Journey Exhibit to increase the visitor experience.

 

Minimum qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Geology/Paleontology or Biology/Zoology major preferred.
  • Previous experience in vertebrate fossil preparation required.
  • May need to operate a museum vehicle. Valid U.S. Driver’s License within 1 week of hire required.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and web enabled applications required.  
  • The Museum loves science.  As a science institution, the Museum believes in the science behind vaccines.  Effective September 1, 2021, all new hires must present proof of being vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of hire.
