The Grant Writer’s primary responsibility is to research funding opportunities and develop competitive grant applications for a variety of corporate, foundation, and government funders.  The Grant Writer will identify potential funding opportunities, prepare summaries, assess competitiveness of the Y’s approach, and organize program and development teams to successfully prepare and submit applications.  The Grant Writer will support implementation of grant tracking systems as well as grant-related capacity building efforts association-wide.



  • Effectively define grant requirements at the proposal stage and communicate grant programming expectations to ensure program teams understand and are prepared to meet deliverables
  • Work strategically to manage the proposal process, concept development, proposal writing, budget development, editing, submission, follow-up, and stewardship/reporting; Work collaboratively with Development Directors to support their grant-related work in each area as well and assist with capacity building where necessary
  • Develops resources, research and prepare for new funding opportunities, including local, state, and federal grants along with private foundations and corporations
  • Research and understand subject matter related to the Y’s core program and issue areas; Provide evidence-informed rationale for services, interventions, and activities
  • Evaluate opportunities in collaboration with program leadership and other stakeholders
  • Critically review and edit grant documents to ensure all submission requirements are met, and assist in editing other communication documents as needed
  • Track all grant applications and grant submission outcomes; Support utilization of the Salesforce Non-Profit Success Package grant module
  • Identify necessary internal data sets (i.e. program outcomes, demographics, etc.) for the successful completion of written grants, and communicate need for data to department directors
  • Maintain inter-departmental relationships
  • Collaborate with team for post-award reporting and close out processes



  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, or related field or equivalent work experience  
  • Must have at least 3+ years' of experience in grant writing and prospect research with a demonstrated track record of success with government, foundations, and corporate funders
  • Must have established track record of successful applications for grants of $300k and above
  • Experience and proficiency with grant prospect databases and government grant tools (i.e. Instrumentl or Foundation Directory Online, Grants.gov, and Zoom Grants) preferred
  • Experience with SalesForce Non-Profit Success Package strongly preferred



  • Must be a highly skilled writer with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and compelling manner
  • Ability to tie scholarly evidence/theory to program design and activities; have a clear understanding of social impact measurements
  • Must be extremely organized and able to maximize collaborator’s contributions to a coherent, technically-sound, and competitive application
  • Analytical and persuasive writing and superior editing skills required
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Exceptional professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and highly organized with the ability to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment, and produce quality work within tight time constraints
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, organization, reliability, and flexibility
  • Approachable, flexible, and empathetic demeanor comfortable communicating both in writing and verbally
  • Ability and commitment to applying an intersectional, anti-racist, and equity lens to our work that lifts up and centers people of color and LGBTQ+ communities and youth
  • Demonstrated ability to have high emotional intelligence to work with cross functional teams and levels within the organization and externally
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours as needed to meet deadlines


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: This position occasionally requires travel throughout San Diego County.
