Keep the mountain moving. Maintain what matters.

This is not a typical fitter role — it’s a rare opportunity to work year-round in one of Australia’s most unique mechanical environments. As a Skitube Fitter at Perisher, you’ll be part of a highly skilled team responsible for maintaining a critical alpine transport system that operates in demanding conditions and is essential to the success of the resort.

The Skitube Alpine Railway is a Swiss-designed rack and cog railway providing all-weather access from Bullocks Flat to Perisher Valley and Blue Cow. Featuring one of the longest underground rail tunnels in Australia and operating up to 550 metres below ground, this is specialist mechanical work that few tradespeople ever experience.

This year-round role offers stability, challenge, and variety — ideal for a qualified Mechanical Fitter who wants long-term employment, technical complexity, and the lifestyle benefits of working in the Snowy Mountains, backed by a global resort operator.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Carrying out scheduled inspections and maintenance on Skitube rolling stock and associated railway infrastructure
  • Performing mechanical fitting and welding tasks to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the railway
  • Undertaking fabrication, new construction, modifications, and conversions to rolling stock, infrastructure, plant, and equipment
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of preventative maintenance programs
  • Working strictly in accordance with the Safety and Environmental Management System
  • Liaising with the Mechanical Supervisor to ensure tools, materials, and spare parts are available and maintained
  • Contributing to a strong safety-first culture within a rail environment

What You'll Bring

  • Trade Certificate – Mechanical Fitter (mandatory requirement)
  • Proven experience working as a qualified fitter in an industrial, transport, heavy maintenance, or similar environment
  • Welding experience (desirable)
  • Strong fault-finding, problem-solving, and diagnostic skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices
  • Ability to work effectively within a small, highly specialised maintenance team
  • Previous railway or rolling stock experience (highly regarded but not essential)

Important Information to Consider Before You Apply

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment Category 2 rail medical, including drug and alcohol testing
  • Undergo random, post-incident, and targeted drug and alcohol testing throughout employment
  • Maintain a 0.00% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) while on duty at all times
  • Fully comply with the requirements of the Rail Safety National Law 2012

Life at Perisher

  • Free staff ski pass for you and your dependents
  • Discounts across food, and retail along with free ski/board equipment hire
  • Free group lessons with qualified instructors
  • Staff events, wellness programs, and employee recognition initiatives
  • Ongoing training and development with a global resort operator
