SUMMARY

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day of all operations for the Museum of the Southwest, with an active presence across the Permian Basin. The Executive Director will build collaborative partnerships and serve as the organization’s representative to the public and community.  The Director will provide significant oversight and guidance to the organization’s budgeting and fiscal management efforts. In this role, the Executive Director will function as a liaison between grantors, governmental representatives, and community partners. Complying with federal and state rules and regulations, the Executive Director will ensure that the Museum of the Southwest continues to find innovative approaches and funding sources for museum operation and innovative programs that support its mission. This position requires a highly organized professional who is an effective communicator that can interact with employees and volunteers at all levels and functions of the organization as well as Museum members, the general public, vendors, and stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Engagement and Revenue Enhancements:

  • Provide leadership as a visible spokesperson who communicates the Museum of the Southwest's organizational direction and vision internally and externally to build commitment and support.
  • Lead staff and board in comprehensive development activities to achieve revenue goals, and maintain strong relationships with government leaders, private donors, and the funding community.
  • Develops, stewards, and maintains appropriate strategic partnerships throughout the community to enhance the organization’s reputation.
  • Provides thought leadership and innovation for Museum operations.

Leadership and Organizational Administration:

  • Promote the development of a professional and efficient organization by providing inspirational leadership and guidance, as well as ensuring continual managerial and team building—of a varied and inclusive staff.
  • Oversee all aspects of day-to-day operations, with an emphasis on program activities.
  • Actively engages with a network of museum professionals, participating in meetings to share and implement current best practices and industry trends with staff and board of directors.

Collections Stewardship, Exhibition, and Program Planning:

  • Oversee exhibition development and installation to maintain preservation standards.
  • Works in partnership with the Senior Director of Curatorial affairs to develop exhibits that support Museum revenue and attract new exhibits.

Organization Mission and Strategy:

  • Partners with the Board of Directors and staff to update the museum's strategic plan and ensures that the mission is carried out through programs and community outreach.
  • Ensures the goals and mission of the Museum is fulfilled.

Financial Performance and Viability:

  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Development and Communications to produce adequate resources to ensure the organization’s financial stability.
  • Ensures the fiscal integrity of the Museum, including an annual budget presented to the Board as well as monthly financial statements in partnership with the Senior Director of Operations, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Oversees the fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintains the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Oversees fundraising and development other resources necessary to support the Museum’s mission.

Board of Governance:

  • Works with the board to fulfill the Museum’s mission.
  • Serves as a member of the Board of Directors and reports to the Board.
  • Responsible for leading the Museum in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions. Collaborate with all board committees and provide whatever support the committees need to perform their work.
  • Works with the Board Chairperson to develop Board meeting agendas and schedule board meetings and ensure that all meetings’ minutes are appropriately located and filed.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, at all levels.
  • Knowledge of human resource management, project management, and fiscal management.
  • Ability to administrate and prioritize varied workloads, executing appropriate judgement and confidentiality.
  • Proven leadership experience, including vision casting, talent development, talent evaluation, and strategic implementation.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • A bachelor’s degree in museum studies, fine arts, business administration, or other related field required.
  • At least ten (10) years of overall non-profit experience as a leader or manager within a public museum, historical society, or a similar non-profit organization is preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience leading diverse teams of staff and or volunteers is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience serving on a volunteer board strongly preferred.
