Job Summary

The Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) seeks a Systems Administrator to provide mission critical support for our computer systems. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to administer the computers running Caltech’s earthquake early warning algorithms that run continuously and emit alarms to apps and other tools that could potentially save lives in the event of a large earthquake anywhere across the entire West Coast of the U.S. and further as ShakeAlert expands. We seek an enthusiastic individual who would like to apply their information technology skills to administer and improve state-of-the-art high-availability LINUX-based systems. Detailed tasking includes LINUX system level support and supervising hardware maintenance; maintenance and troubleshooting of data processing applications.

This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to campus as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties

  • Be part of a team administering the SCSN/CISN and ShakeAlert real-time data acquisition, processing, and analysis application software, and associated computer hardware and system software.
  • Deploy, test, and maintain applications written in C++, Java, Python, or other languages under LINUX.
  • Deploy and operate cloud computing and virtualization software and services, using VMware and AWS cloud.
  • Maintain IP networking, including routers and switches.
  • Participate in procurement, installation, and configuration of new hardware or software.
  • Participate in a Duty Rotation.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Basic Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience in system administration and maintaining application software in UNIX/LINUX environment.
  • An active interest in routine operations to ensure data integrity and availability, as well as innovation and incorporating new efficiencies into the operation.
  • Demonstrated skills in Linux administration and shell scripting experience, preferably in bash, tcsh, or Python.
  • Must have abilities for troubleshooting and maintenance of computer hardware and IP communications equipment.
  • Proven ability to work in a team of staff with a wide range of expertise is necessary.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills needed. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Physical Sciences is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in system administration and maintaining application software in UNIX/LINUX environment for science or engineering.
  • Some familiarity with basic Cisco/Network administration, Cisco switches and routers, understanding of NAT/PNAT (both dynamic and static), and multicast and OSPF protocols.
  • Some experience with cloud computing, such as AWS.

Hiring Range

$43.25 to $52.25 per hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
