Summary:

The MarinHealth Medical Network Certified Nurse Midwife plays a dynamic role in the Marin community, pairing in-patient work with out-patient clinical care, offering excellent continuity of care to both privately insured and publicly insured patients. The role requires a highly skilled Certified Nurse Midwife who can efficiently and independently run outpatient OB and GYN clinical sessions, and who can assist in C-sections and attend to the obstetrical needs of a highly varied patient population. The Certified Nurse Midwife will provide inpatient care to patients at Marin General Hospital a varied number of days per week as needed, nights, weekends and some holiday shifts included. The Certified Nurse Midwife may also perform 1-3 clinical sessions in the outpatient setting (either at MHMN or the Marin Community Clinics) a week as needed. The Certified Nurse Midwife may be asked to complete administrative tasks for MHMN, and sit on relevant hospital committees as the OB representative.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • The CNM, in collaboration with the Hospitalists on the shift, will provide appropriate care within the scope of midwifery protocols to all of the OB patients in MarinHealth Medical Center.
  • Provide prenatal care, labor management, and postpartum care for patients in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols and in consultation with a physician. Use advanced knowledge of and specialized skills in midwifery to manage normal childbirth and provide antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care.
  • Takes patients' medical, social and obstetric history; performs physical, vaginal, breast, clinical pelvimetry and general health status OB and GYN exams; orders and/or performs approved laboratory and diagnostic exams, consulting with and/or referring complications to a physician.
  • Perform limited sonography; first trimester dating and viability assessment, third trimester AFIs and fetal position confirmation.
  • Orders medications per midwifery protocols; documents care rendered in patient electronic health record; evaluates patient progress; consults with other members of the health care team to develop and manage care and follow-up plans.
  • Independently manages and delivers low-risk patients, assumes co-management of high-risk women when appropriate and manages complications and emergencies until physician arrives; assesses immediate and ongoing status of labor, well-being of patient and fetus and normalcy of progress.
  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures relevant to pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum care.
  • Recognizes emergent, abnormal and unsatisfactory obstetric and neonatal conditions and initiate appropriate measures.
  • Initiates and carries out midwifery and medical interventions, such as but not limited to amniotomy, IUPC insertion, fetal scalp electrode application, catheterization, IV fluid administration, placement of cervical ripening balloon, episiotomy, anesthesia and medications; supports patients during labor.
  • Assists physicians with operative deliveries as required. C-section surgical assist certification must be successfully completed as per hospital requirements.
  • Performs initial assessment of newborn status; assists in promoting establishment of airway and maintenance of body temperature; begins resuscitation efforts in the absence of a physician.
  • Manages postpartum care; writes postpartum orders as indicated; provides guidance, assistance and referrals to community medical and social agencies and resources; signs birth certificates.
  • Provides telephone triage and consultation to patients; participates in prenatal and postpartum patient education.
  • In accordance with the requirements of targeted case management, performs Medi-Cal administrative activities which include assisting Medi-Cal beneficiaries to gain access to needed medical, social, educational and other services.
  • Prepare, input, and maintain organized, detailed and accurate medical records.
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide rounding and medical handoff to new clinical team each day when performing in-patient care.
  • Willing to mentor and teach medical and midwifery students.
  • May be assigned to participate in hospital committees as needed.
  • Attend in-patient and outpatient CNM meetings.
  • Attend clinic site staff meetings.
  • Other duties as required or requested.

Qualifications:

• Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing or public health (MSN, MPH) required and a midwifery program approved by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM).

• Must have current California RN and Certified Nurse Midwife license and be certified by the ACNM (or eligible).

• CA CNM Furnishing License required

• At least 3 years of experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife, preferred.

• Current CPR (BLS) or ACLS certification.

• A State furnishing license is required.

• Bilingual Spanish with proficiency in OB/GYN care preferred.

• Surgical First Assist training certification for C-Section, or equivalent preferred. First Trimester and Third Trimester Sonography training highly desired.

The compensation for this role listed on this posting is in compliance with applicable law.  The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on the individual’s skills, experience, internal/market equity factors, and qualifications.  This posted minimum and maximum range represents the minimum and maximum of what we reasonably expect to compensate for the position.  Furthermore, all compensation decisions are ultimately determined in accordance with our compensation philosophy.  Compensation for positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by the agreements in the aforementioned document.
