Job Summary

The Librarian for Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS Librarian) is a Research Services (RS) Librarian with a Liaison Role to the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences (GPS). The GPS Librarian advances the Institute’s research and education mission by designing, developing, and delivering equitable and inclusive services and resources that support responsible and effective knowledge creation, dissemination, and discovery. The GPS Librarian collaborates with Caltech faculty, administrators, students, and staff on the appropriate use, creation, management, and dissemination of knowledge at every stage in the research lifecycle. The GPS Librarian primarily serves as the Caltech Library’s liaison to the GPS Division to promote and enhance Library services and resources. They also serve as Functional Coordinator for one or more components of Research Services’ operations and programs.

The GPS Librarian regularly contributes to the Library’s public services operations, providing ongoing expert consultation and instruction to the Caltech community. They also keep abreast of professional trends and developments in academic and research librarianship, actively participating in professional service and/or scholarship.

This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to campus as soon as possible.

Job Duties

  • Provides expert instructional and research support to the Caltech community through inclusive and equitable user-focused reference service, research consultations, teaching, outreach, and engagement with campus by:
    • Maintaining active relationships with faculty, students, and staff in the GPS Division and connecting them with Library services (such as data management or publication analysis) to meet their needs.
    • Developing both synchronous and asynchronous instructional and reference materials.
    • Providing assistance with topics such as information retrieval, evaluation of scholarly sources, and proper citation practices, as well as related tools.
    • Actively soliciting GPS Division needs around collections for research and teaching, including course reserves.
    • Staffing and managing departmental libraries where applicable.
  • Participates as a member of the Library Public Services team to provide synchronous and asynchronous support to all members of the Caltech community, including other Library Departments.
  • Contributes to the Library’s collection management efforts in GPS by:
    • Evaluating collection coverage, condition, and usage.
    • Collecting patron feedback to inform acquisition of new materials.
    • Identifying materials suitable for transfer to alternate locations or de-acquisition.
  • Serves on strategy teams, standing committees, and ad-hoc working groups to develop services and implement technologies that enhance knowledge discovery, management, and dissemination at Caltech.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with vendors of collections and other services for the benefit of Caltech Library and the broader campus community.
  • Recruits content for the Caltech Collection of Open Digital Archives (CODA) and assists Caltech depositors in preparing and submitting works for inclusion in the digital repository.
  • Keeps abreast of professional developments and emerging trends in one or more areas of assigned specialty by participating in conferences, trainings, workshops, or continuing education classes.
    • Areas may include but are not limited to: science and technology information services; scholarly communication; responsible handling of information; research information systems and networks; academic publishing; research data management, or other pertinent fields.
  • Contributes to the profession through service to library/information science organizations or independent scholarship leading to publication.

Basic Qualifications

  • Accredited master’s degree in library/information science and academic coursework in a research discipline, or a PhD degree with at least two years’ experience in library, publishing, or information services.
  • Experience conveying technical information to a general audience in both informal and formal settings, including teaching skills sufficient to integrate effective reference and instruction service at service points and to accomplish effective classroom instruction.
  • Advanced working knowledge of the internet, internet information resources and the leading tools for location and retrieval of scholarly information in all formats.
  • Proficiency in using library systems and online discovery tools to efficiently locate resources and source materials for Caltech users.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of collection management principles of authenticity, quality, and measures of appropriateness for research and instructional users.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information description standards, classification principles, and metadata schema.
  • Familiar with concepts, goals, and methods of providing exemplary client service in an academic or research organization.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet, database, and reference management software.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including experience with associated technology.

COVID-19 Vaccine Required for All Employees

Caltech has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy effective October 15, 2021, requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for all employees (with Institute-approved exemptions for religious or medical contraindications only). At present, an individual is deemed “fully vaccinated” when that person has received, at least 14 days prior, either the second dose in a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series (e.g., Pfizer or Moderna) or a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine (e.g., Johnson & Johnson).
