PAYROLL AND ACCOUNTING SPECIALIST

Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) is seeking a full-time Payroll and Accounting Specialist to maintain financial accounts and functions, ensuring accounting and payroll functions are completed accurately and timely. This position has the opportunity to work a hybrid work arrangement, based out of our office located in Charlotte, MI.

In this Payroll and Accounting Specialist role, you will have the opportunity to:

  1. Update and maintain employee information in the workforce management and cloud solutions system to complete payroll timely and efficiently.
  2. Create and distribute payroll reports.
  3. Prepare journal entries for financial functions.
  4. Prepare year-end accounting documentation and assist in year-end reporting.
  5. Audit and verify employee leave balances and other employee records for accuracy and compliance.
  6. Maintain accurate accounting records including ledgers, journals, receipts, and invoices.
  7. Resolve discrepancies and communicate with division management, employees, and external parties to explain, correct, and improve processes and procedures.
  8. Communicate in-person, by email, and telephone both internally and externally, with a high degree of customer service, to understand and respond to inquiries or share information in a timely fashion.
  9. Assist in work activities associated with accounts payable, accounts receivable and provide department coverage as needed.

Ideal Candidates will possess:

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, finance or related field of study; Bachelor’s degree, preferred
  • Understanding of GAAP accounting principles
  • General accounting and payroll processing experience
  • Prior experience using accounting software or related database systems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and time management capability
  • Ability to travel for business between BEDHD offices, for meetings, and to other work-site locations throughout Barry and Eaton counties.
