Cleans and disinfects buildings, exhibits, holding areas and other facilities which house animals; keeps drains free; maintains exhibit grounds; reports needed repairs to facilities and grounds. Cares for, and provides food and water for, the animal collection at designated times; observes the health of the animals and reports unusual behavior or other irregularities to the lead keeper. Assists in exhibitry set-up and in the catching, and crating of animals.Keeps watch for any vandalism or possible mistreatment of the collection. Participates in zoo training programs. Other duties as assigned.
Some knowledge of the care and feeding of mammals, reptiles and/or birds represented in the zoo. Some knowledge of the methods and techniques used in general maintenance repair and cleaning of zoo facilities. Working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the work and the proper safety precautions for the safe performance of the job. Ability to work with animals. Ability to detect signs of illness in animals. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments. Skill in routine care of animals. Sufficient manual dexterity to develop skill in the care and use of tools, equipment and facilities used in the work.
