West Park Healthcare Centre helps patients get their lives back by through the provision of specialized rehabilitation and complex continuing care services and a continuum of inpatient, outpatient and outreach care and treatment. West Park’s 27-acre site is being transformed into an integrated campus of care, including a new hospital and additional community based services focused on seniors and people living with disabilities.

Job Overview:

Responsible for assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders.

Accountabilities:

  • Complete swallowing assessments, communicate recommendations to the patient, family and team and follow-up to ensure successful implementation
  • Assess communication (speech and language), recommend interventions and provide treatment as caseload permits
  • Provide patient and family education and counselling
  • Provide staff, student and volunteer education and training
  • Initiate referrals to other services including collaboration with the alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) service providers
  • Develop and maintain advances in practice related to the profession, including participation in current projects and initiatives to support improved swallowing and speech services
  • Provide clinical supervision to a Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA)
  • Provide clinical supervision to therapy assistants and students
  • Complete timely and thorough clinical documentation
  • Complete clinical workload statistics
  • Participate in the evaluation of clinical practices
  • Participate in activities and interest groups relating to swallowing and speech
  • Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors including:
    • Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
    • Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
    • Taking corrective action, where possible
    • Attendance at safety meetings/training/updates in accordance with the Centre’s standards
  • Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the centre’s core values and helps patients get their life back
  • Should be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors
  • Evidence of satisfactory attendance record
  • An employee’s disciplinary record will be reviewed as part of the assessment of qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Speech Language Pathology
  • Eligible for CASLPO Registration
  • Must be able to achieve 80% in the Functional Independent Measure (FIM) certification exam within the probationary period and on recertification exams if applying to work on any of the following rehabilitation units:  3EA (Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation), 3EB (Amputee Rehabilitation), 3EC (Neurological Rehabilitation), 2EB (TB Rehabilitation) and 2WF (Respiratory Rehabilitation).
  • 1 to 2 years related experience and demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm for working with adults who have sustained acquired brain injuries or other neurological impairments
  • Experience with and a desire to learn about diverse populations including those with acquired brain injuries. Continuing education and/or professional development in the area of ABI
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with patients, families and all levels of staff
  • Participate actively in various teams within each of the centre-wide units
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be self-directed, while collaborating and seeking direction appropriately
  • Evidence of good performance history and attendance record
