ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Under the supervision of the Project Manager and Amazon Program Officer, the Program Officer performs high level tasks and will assist in the leadership and implementation of the Conservando Juntos (Together for Conservation) project being carried out in the Western Amazon region by Internews’ Americas Program Management Unit (PMU) in collaboration with Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN).

The Program Officer directly manages the story and media grant calls – with the goal of supporting grantees to develop their stories and carry out their proposals successfully. This includes coordinating with Americas PMU and EJN on launching calls for proposals, organizing the grantees’ selection process and overseeing mentorship for recipients. The Program Officer will develop reports and track deliverables, work closely with the project team, and engage business management and monitoring and evaluation staff as needed.

LOGISTICS

This position will be based remotely in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador or Peru. Candidates should have work authorization in their location that does not require sponsorship from Internews.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Under the supervision of the Project Manager and Amazon Program Officer, support implementation of the Conservando Juntos project being carried out in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society and numerous other partners in the Western Amazon region.
  • Oversee the management and production of story and media grants:  draft grant opportunities; review, select, and fulfil story and media grants; mentor grantees; work on special collaborative or cross-border reports; and distribute stories, including republishing the stories on the EJN website and posting to social media.
  • In collaboration with the Project Manager, Amazon Program Officer and other staff, assist with training and capacity-building activities, particularly mentoring story and media grantees. This position may also participate in training workshops, assist in producing webinars, and produce other resources such as tip sheets, etc.
  • Review proposals/reports/budgets from grantees, develop tracking systems and monitor the grantees’ contracts, including budget/agreement negotiation, in collaboration with the project team
  • Coordinate with the Amazon Program Officer and Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, and Learning (MERL) staff on tracking progress towards project deliverables, assessing impact and monitoring and publication/broadcasting of impact stories.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports from conferences and discussion panels.
  • Coordinate the distribution of project content to EJN’s and Internews’ websites, newsletters and social media platforms. 
  • Maintain relationships with current and potential media partners in the project’s target countries (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru).
  • Create and implement a strategy for improved communications on program activities and accomplishments.
  • Attend South America team and Earth Journalism Network meetings, as needed.
  • Represent Internews at workshops, conferences and events.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Required

  • Relevant university degree or equivalent lived/professional experience.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant programmatic experience.
  • Native/bilingual fluency in Spanish or Portuguese (written and spoken).
  • Professional proficiency in English.
  • Experience in developing or supporting projects with an international and regional focus
  • Previous work experience with donor programs and projects
  • Experience organizing events, including international travel arrangements, vendor negotiations, event logistics, etc.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including diplomacy, tact, and the ability to negotiate.
  • Excellent communication skills: speaking, writing, and listening.
  • Proven ability to set priorities and manage time effectively.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as an effective team member.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple on-going assignments.
  • Familiarity with content management systems and workflows 
    Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Willingness to work with international colleagues in distant (and multiple) time zones, including participation in meetings after normal working hours

Preferred

Note: Candidates who do not have these preferred qualifications, but are interested and willing to learn, are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience working as a journalist and/or in an editorial position, preferably a newsroom related.
  • Experience implementing USG-funded programs, or other programs with significant reporting, evaluation, and compliance components.
  • Experience managing media development projects including mentoring journalists.
  • Familiarity with environmental issues in the Amazon Basin.
  • Experience collaborating with Indigenous and local communities.
