Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow I (RF-I) for a two-year, renewable appointment for its Natural Resources and Resilience Unit.  This position is based at IFPRI headquarters located in Washington, D.C but the position involves travel to any of the countries in which IFPRI carries out its research. The selected candidate will conduct interdisciplinary research on gender equality and women’s empowerment, climate change adaptation and mitigation, resilience, nature-positive agricultural production, and small-scale irrigation using mixed methods. Research should consider how gender and nutrition intersect with the above research areas. The successful candidate will also manage projects, supervise research support staff, engage in outreach and capacity strengthening activities, and contribute to fundraising activities, among other duties. 

Essential Duties:

This position requires a mix of research, project management, capacity strengthening, communications, fundraising, staff supervision, and other activities.

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct collaborative research on inclusive and nutrition-sensitive climate change adaptation and mitigation, resilience, nature-positive agricultural production, and small-scale irrigation using mixed methods. Areas of research should have particular relevance to smallholder production systems and support food system transformation.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals, and other outlets such as discussion paper series, books, blogs and other popular outlets.
  • Develop and manage research programs and/or projects, including developing workplans, developing and monitoring of the program/project budget, recruiting collaborators and partners, coordinating activities and monitoring progress towards deliverables, reporting on progress to the donor, conducting capacity-strengthening activities, engaging with policymakers and partners, and sharing research findings.
  • Cultivate professional relationships with external collaborators and collaborating organizations for the purposes of research, capacity development, and communications in the subject areas.
  • Contribute to One CGIAR research initiatives, platforms, and megaprograms.
  • Communicate research to a broad spectrum of stakeholders (researchers, academicians, policy makers, local partners, etc.).
  • Represent IFPRI at meetings, debates, panel discussions, media interviews etc.
  • Participate in the preparation of research funding proposals and in the cultivation of relationships with potential funders
  • Supervise the work of research support staff and interns. 

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Agricultural or Social Science or closely related field and 3 years of post-PhD research experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct interdisciplinary and mixed-methods research on research areas identified above. 
  • Demonstrated ability to perform critical analyses of own & others’ research. 
  • Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals, books, and other outlets. 
  • External recognition within peer professional network due to publications and other leaderships activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective interactions in a multicultural setting with other researchers and with policymakers, donors, and civil society, facilitating impact of research & capacity strengthening.
  • The ability to effectively contribute to IFPRI’s overall institutional value through demonstrated participation and support for organization-wide programs and activities.
  • Willingness to travel extensively as required
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills with demonstrated excellence in written and oral presentations.
  • Proven experience in developing, managing, and reporting on program/project budgets.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy (PC, Microsoft Applications) 
  • Experience in identifying funding prospects and developing project proposals.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and strong experience building and managing teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in a second language of the U.N. system.
  • Ability and experience in managing internal and external relationships with project teams, donors, policymakers, and collaborators.
  • Experience in collecting quantitative and qualitative data in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Knowledge of software for quantitative and qualitative data analysis (e.g. STATA and NVIVO). 

Physical Demand and Work Environment:

  • Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time. 
  • Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds. 
  • Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.

Salary Range: The expected salary range for this job requisition is between $99,300 - $ 124,100.  In determining your salary, we will consider your experience and other job-related factors.
