Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, has been helping animals and people since 1873. Our organization cares for around 7500 animals each year and makes possible a variety of programs to address issues that contribute to the surrender of unwanted animals. As an open-admission organization, we accept every animal in need of help. The Behavior and Training Manager’s role is to develop, implement and monitor all programs intended to identify, correct, and prevent problem behavior in cats, dogs and other animals.
Essential Job Duties:
Provides compassionate care to all animals in the shelter
Evaluates behavior of shelter animals for adoptability and makes recommendations to the Director of Shelter Services
Develops, implements, and monitors programs intended to identify, correct and prevent problem behavior in shelter animals
Oversee public dog training classes, Feline-ality, Pet Peeves, shelter behavior enrichment programs, behavior evaluations and assessment of shelter animals
Design and conduct canine behavior and training classes for adopters and other community pet owners
Provides behavior consulting for adopters and conducts private evaluations for community pet owners
Assists shelter staff with adoption counseling, safe animal handling and euthanasia decisions
Exercise patience and tact when working with difficult and challenging people
Maintains resource library of animal training, obedience and behavior materials
Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable state and federal laws
Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others
Perform other duties as requested
Responsible for supervising, scheduling, training, development and counseling of behavior and training staff and volunteers
Plans, organizes, schedules, directs and controls the work of others and evaluates the operation of the department Responsible for the quality and quantity of staff’s work
Evaluates staff performance and makes recommendations as to personnel actions like promotions, changes in pay, overtime and discipline
Keeps employees informed, listens to, responds to complaints, and carries out most personnel actions.
Interviews prospective employees and makes hiring decisions
Effectively manages resources, both people and dollars for maximum benefit of Lollypop Farm
Provides orientating and training for new staff and volunteers
Develops and maintains SOP for behavior programs.
Education:Bachelor’s degree in biological or behavioral science with an emphasis in animal behavior, applied animal behavior or other animal behavior certifications preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years professional experience in animal training. Minimum of 3-year supervisory experience. Animal handling experience required. Certified pet dog trainer (CPDT) preferred. Animal Shelter experience preferred.
Physical Demands: Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, handle, see and lift. Occasionally required to sit and speak. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
