Overview

Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, has been helping animals and people since 1873. Our organization cares for around 7500 animals each year and makes possible a variety of programs to address issues that contribute to the surrender of unwanted animals. As an open-admission organization, we accept every animal in need of help. The Humane Investigator’s role is to investigate complaints alleging animal abuse and make arrests when appropriate.

 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Investigate complaints of cruelty to animals
  • Collect evidence on cruelty cases (take pictures, interview suspects)
  • Complete paperwork pertaining to cases in a professional and timely manner
  • Return phone calls pertaining to cases/ case development
  • Answer animal cruelty complaint phone calls
  • Perform on-call duties
  • Assist other agencies or persons with concerns about animals in need  
  • Conduct educational programs as requested
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable State and Federal laws
  • Perform other duties as requested
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others
  • Maintain good housekeeping

 

Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus two years schooling in criminal justice preferred

Experience: Must be a New York Certified Police Officer or Peace Officer; scene response and crime investigation experience preferred.  Must have knowledge of basic animal care and handling and possess a valid New York State driver license.

Skills: Ability to read and interpret business documents. Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with public groups and employees throughout the organization.  Ability to testify in a court of law. Understand and interpret New York State Law. Must be able to write and file legal documents. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form. Basic computer skills, ability to learn internal software. Position requires firearm, radio, pepper spray, baton and animal capture equipment.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear and see.  Occasionally required to lift, carry, push and pull 45+ pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, handle and feel.  Investigators must be able to perform duties even when exposed to high stress situations and be capable of defending themselves and others from physical attack or deadly physical force.  Position also requires animal handling and lifting.
