Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, has been helping animals and people since 1873. Our organization cares for around 7500 animals each year and makes possible a variety of programs to address issues that contribute to the surrender of unwanted animals. As an open-admission organization, we accept every animal in need of help. The Behavior and Training Staff’s role is to support the activities and duties of the behavior department, including conducting training classes, performing behavioral evaluations and enrichment activities with shelter animals, and providing behavioral counseling to adopters and clients.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide compassionate care to all animals in the shelter
  • Evaluate behavior of shelter animals for adoptability in accordance with shelter procedures
  • Assess animal length of stay and quality of life daily, adjusting plans as necessary
  • Perform behavior modification for shelter dogs and cats to improve chance of adoption
  • Assists shelter staff with adoption counseling, safe animal handling and euthanasia decisions
  • Liaison with shelter employees to ensure animals are receiving proper enrichment in and out of kennel
  • Provide behavior counseling for adopters pre and post adoption
  • Train staff and volunteers in proper dog and cat handling skills and techniques
  • Train and oversee dog training volunteer assistants
  • Train foster volunteers for behavior modification foster cases
  • Conduct dog training classes weekly
  • Assist with diversion calls as necessary
  • Provide excellent customer service to the organization’s internal and external clients
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others
  • Maintain good housekeeping
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable state and federal laws
  • Perform other duties as requested


Education: Bachelor’s degree in biological or behavioral science with an emphasis in animal behavior, applied animal behavior or other animal behavior certifications preferred.

Experience: Animal handling experience required. Minimum of 1 year professional experience in animal training preferred. Certified pet dog trainer (CPDT) preferred. Animal shelter experience strongly preferred.

Physical Demands: Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, handle, see and lift. Occasionally required to sit and speak. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
